The New England Patriots are 10-0 and have won these games by an average score of 41-16. They are not running up the score nor should they scale back their offensive explosiveness during games where they are in solid command when victory is assured.
Every year at the College and Hi School levels, we see brilliant teams cake walk thru their regular season schedule with massive blowouts. I do not recall anyone complaining about the University of Kansas current football teams running up the score this year do you? They are 11-0 and have won in similar fashion to the Patriots by an average margin of 46-14. That's even greater margin than the Patriots so why isn't everyone complaining??? Why is this situation any different???
A Patriots apologist I am not, I would defend any team in this current predicament of managing an offense as explosive. Has nothing to do with The Patriots but more about the irritation the media is giving me about the subject and with fans who call into radio shows who have no common sense about football.
The bottom line is the Patriots offense is a well oiled machine, one more win they clinch the AFC East. Their other team goals for the season are to secure home field, and win the Superbowl. The current state of the Pats offense is that they are virtually unstoppable. Why would any coach alter or tinker with the offensive production. Any attempts to scale back may prove counter productive for the Pats season goals.
The bottom line is every hi school, college and pro team are practicing the same philosophy as the Patriots offense anytime the offense team is on the field. The offenses primary goal is to score a touchdown. If the Patriots suddenly draw a line in the middle of the third quarter when most of their games are already decided, and suddenly begin to kneel on the ball or playing NOT to score, then this could have a major impact on the offenses ability to score when they need to when it counts. I do not even know how you would do this anyway, to run a offense with the goal of not scoring in order to keep the game respectable.
In addition to the weekly blowouts, think of the huge psychological advantage they are building up against their opponent even before taking the field on Sundays. I am sure the opposing defenses are scratching their heads thinking how in the world are we going to stop the Patriots this weekend? Why in the world would a coach want to minimize this psychological advantage as they head into the playoffs? How many titles has Tiger Woods won over the last decade in part due cause some of his opponents are intimidated because they are playing as the same group as Tiger??
The bottom line is simple, if teams want their loses look better when they lose to the Patriots, their defenses need to step up and stop them more often and not quit asking the Pats to stop themselves.
Maybe that's the problem with the Patriots, maybe no one can stop the Pats except themselves?
